You know your BMI? More and more, people know theirs, just like they know their cholesterol. If you do not know your BMI, you can use an available online BMI calculator, including . All you need is your height and weight. Or, you can calculate it yourself, using this formula:BMI = (Pound weight x 703) / (Height in inches x Height in inches). So, now that you know your BMI, is it worth knowing? What Your BMI means To understand what your BMI means, it is useful to take a step back and understand what is measuring and why it is measured. The BMI is a calculation of its size that takes into account its height and weight. Several years ago, I remember using tables that asked him to find his height along the left side and then slide the finger to the right to see his "ideal weight" of the options listed under small, medium or large "frame". These graphics come from "current" statistics, calculations that life insurance companies use to determine their likelihood of reaching an advanced age based on data from thousands of people. These graphics were cumbersome to use, and it was never clear how one was to decide a person's "frame size." The BMI does something similar, expresses the relationship between its height and weight as a unique number that does not depend on the size of the frame. Although the origin of BMI is over 200 years old, it is quite new as a health measure. What is a normal BMI? A normal BMI is between 18.5 and 25; a person with BMI between 25 and 30 is considered overweight; and a person with BMI over 30 is considered obese. A person is considered low weight if the BMI is below 18.5. As with most health measures, BMI is not a perfect test. For example, results can be discarded by pregnancy or high muscle mass, and may not be a good health measure for children or the elderly. So why does the BMI matter? In general, the higher your BMI, the greater the risk of developing a range of conditions linked to excess weight, including: almost 3 million people are stained annually around the world due to being overweight or obese. In addition, regardless of any particular illness, people with high BMI often report feeling better, both physically and psychologically, once they lose weight. And here's why BMI doesn't matter It is important to recognize that BMI itself is not measuring "health" or physiological status (such as the rest of blood pressure) that indicates the presence (or absence) of the disease. It's just a measure of its size. Many people have a high or low BMI and are healthy and, on the contrary, many people with normal BMI are not healthy. In fact, a person with a normal BMI who smokes and has a strong family history of cardiovascular disease may have a higher risk of early cardiovascular death than someone who has a high BMI but is a physically adequate non-smoking person. And then there's the "dark paradox." they have found that even though the risk of certain diseases increases with the increase of BMI, people actually tend to live longer, on average, if their BMI is a little on the top. Should we stop giving the BMI so much weight? Maybe. Studies suggest that the BMI only frequently "less" metabolic health. For example, he found that: Actually, this should not be a surprise. BMI, as a single measure, is not expected to identify cardiovascular health or disease; the same is true for cholesterol, blood sugar or blood pressure as a single measure. And while cardiovascular health is important, it is not the only health measure! For example, this study did not consider the conditions that could also be relevant to an individual with a high BMI, such as liver disease or arthritis. In addition, more recent studies (such as and ) suggest that those who are healthy, overweight or obese are more likely to develop diabetes or other negative health consequences over time. Basic theme As a single measure, BMI is not clearly a perfect health measure. But it remains a useful starting point for the important conditions that become more likely when a person is overweight or obese. In my opinion, it is a good idea to know your BMI. But it is also important to recognize their limitations. Related information: Related Posts:Comments: Of course, healthy food is very useful for heart health, I think.
