Here is the truth about the left and right branch blocks that appear in some ECG readings. Your doctor told you you have a block of branches. Although the phrase evokes images of a suburban subdivision, the bundle branch blocks are heart conduction system anomalies that appear in a trace of electrical activity in the heart, called electrocardiogram (ECG). Abnormal EKG What is an abnormal EKG? One measures the electrical activity of your heart. This non-invasive test can measure many aspects, from how fast the heart beats to how well your cameras drive electric power. An abnormal EKG can mean many things. Sometimes an EKG anomaly is a normal variation in the heart rate, which does not affect your health. Other times, an abnormal EKG may indicate a medical emergency, such as a (heart attack) or a dangerous one. A doctor or medical professional trained in reading EKGs can interpret readings to determine if you need more treatments. . An EKG machine is typically a portable machine that has 12 cables, or long, flexible, wire-like tubes connected to sticky electrodes. These are placed in designated areas around the heart and in the arms and legs. The electrodes perceive electrical impulses from multiple directions. Submitting to an EKG procedure is not painful. You don't have to do anything special to prepare for the test. The test itself usually lasts five minutes or less. The EKG machine does not generate electricity. Instead, it performs and measures the electrical activity. Typically, the heart drives electricity on a standard track from the right atrium to the left atrium. The electric current then goes to the , which indicates the ventricles to contract. The current then flows to an area known as the Su package. This area is divided into fibers that provide current to the left and right ventricles. Any disturbance in this current can affect the ability of the heart to work well. Ideally, an EKG can measure any potential disruption. Because an EKG measures so many different aspects of the heart, abnormal results can mean several problems. These include: Defects or anomalies in the shape and size of the heart: An abnormal EKG may indicate that one or more aspects of the walls of the heart are larger than others. This may indicate that the heart is working harder than normal to pump the blood. : are particles that are driving electricity in the body that help keep the heart muscle beating in the rhythm. , and they're electrolytes. If your electrolytes are unbalanced, you may have an abnormal EKG reading. Heart attack or ischemia: During a heart attack, the blood flow in the heart is affected and the heart tissue can begin to lose oxygen and die. This tissue will not drive electricity too, which can cause an abnormal EKG. Ischemia, or lack of blood flow, can also cause abnormal EKG. Heart rate abnormalities: A typical human is between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). An EKG can determine whether the heart is beating too fast or too slow. Heart rate abnormalities: A heart typically beats in a constant rhythm. An EKG can reveal whether the heart is beating in rhythm or sequence. Side effects of medicines: Taking certain medicines may affect the frequency and rhythm of a heart. Sometimes given medicines to improve the heart rate can have the reverse effect and cause. Examples of medicines that affect the heart rate include , sodium channel blockers, and . . Several symptoms may indicate that you may need an EKG to determine if your heart is working normally. Look for emergency medical care if you experience: The response to treatment to an abnormal EKG usually depends on the underlying cause. For example, some people have a very slow heartbeat where the heart does not lead electrical signals in the right order. This person may require a , which helps restore the heart at a more normal rate. Other people may require medications taken regularly to maintain a more normal heart rate. Someone who has a heart attack may require or surgery to allow blood flow to return to the heart. People with electrolytic imbalances may require correction with medicines or liquids. For example, a person with can have unbalanced electrolytes that are causing an abnormal EKG. This person may require fluids, drinks that contain electrolytes or medications to restore electrolytes. Sometimes a doctor may not recommend any treatment for an abnormal EKG. This may be the case if a person has no problem symptoms or if abnormality is not a cause of concern.
